Latex allergy and breast augmentation

Question:  I have a latex allergy. Can I have my breasts done?

Dr. Salzhauer:  That’s actually the first time I’ve been asked that. And I can tell you unequivocally that yes, you can have your breasts done, even though you have a latex allergy. It’s not a contraindication to breast implants. Breast implant shells are made from silicone, and they don’t have any latex in their construction. Now when you come in for the surgery we have to be made aware of the latex allergy, because there are a lot of things in the operating room that are made out of latex, including the gloves that we typically wear. Now we have latex free gloves and latex free equipment, latex free tubes and things that we use for people who are allergic to latex.  Again, the doctor needs to know that you have a latex allergy so that precautions can be taken in the operating room to make sure you do not have a reaction. The biggest thing is that the gloves that the surgeon and the assistants wear do not contain any latex.  Over the years, people develop latex allergies. Sometimes it’s minor, they just get a redness or itchiness to the skin, and other times it can be a major allergy where they actually go in to anaphylactic shock, and can be life threatening.
