“Brasilian Butt Lifts” and blepharoplasties: Oh, my!

DR. Salzhauer: You're listening to Nip Talk Radio, everybody. Our number here in the studio is 1-877-850-8585. We're going to be answering your phone calls later in the show, so if you have a question, feel free to call us. My name is DR. Michael Salzhauer, the practice is Bal Harbor Plastic Surgery Associates. The number in the office is 305-861-8266. And we can do all kinds of plastic surgery from head to toe. Tummy tucks, liposuction, face lifts, rhinoplasty (this is nose reshaping), audioplasty (that is ear reshaping), fat transfer (also known as “Brazilian Butt Lifting”) which is basically taking fat from an area of the fat where you don't want it and putting it in an area where you do want it. That's becoming a lot more popular lately, as women want to augment their glutial area.

That trend, actually, has a reasonable cause. Women all over the world look different, but what's considered beautiful in terms of the hip waist ratio is fairly consistent in all cultures. And basically, you want your waist circumference to be about 30 percent smaller than your hip circumference. So, while you can diet and exercise to make your waist smaller, it's a little bit hard to diet and exercise to get your waist smaller and at the same time make your hips bigger so you keep that ideal ratio of 0.7. So one way around that is to get rid of fat from one area like your waist, and then inject it into your hips, the other area, so that you have those attractive curves that all the models and actresses and so forth, ideal and beautiful people, like to have. So that's the reason why I think the trend in this Brazilian Butt Lift thing and fat transfers is so common.

Jeannine: And we've been getting a lot of questions about that, a lot. This past year, that has really been one of the main things.

DR, Salzhauer: I would say it's doubled or tripled in the last couple of years. The other thing that's increasing over the last year, I've noticed is surgery in the 60-year-old age groups and above. The trend has been dubbed “silver surgery”. Men and women are living longer, happier, healthier lives, thank God, and they want to look their best.

Especially what's common is people coming in to ask for the skin above their eyes to be removed. As you get older, your eyebrows start to fall. And that pushes the skin between your eyebrows and your eyelids over on top of your eyes, and it becomes difficult to see sometimes out of the corners of your eyes when you look up. So the surgery to get rid of that skin is called a blephoroplasty, or an upper eyelid lift. And it's a very common and simple procedure. It takes about an hour. In some cases, insurance will even cover it. Medicare covers it for example if you go to an ophthalmologist, and they can show with their testing that your field of vision is decreased. And most people who do have this extra fold of skin do have a decreased field of vision. So it's a very common operation. A plastic surgeon can do it, and ophthalmologist can do it, some cosmetic ophthalmologists can do it, so if you're 60 plus and you’re starting to notice extra skin above your eyelids, I would go to an ophthalmologist and get checked for decrease of field of vision, and see if your insurance will cover that operation. If not, of course, any cosmetic surgeon can do it for you.

Jeannine: that is one of the easiest procedures that I had, was that. I got it on Thursday and went â it was great.

DR. Salzhauer: It's a fairly quick recovery. There's a little bit of bruising, the sutures come out at about one week, so you do have to ensure you're not â you don't have events or weddings or any big family parties to attend.

Jeannine: Made a big difference for me. My eyes were opened, my makeup didn't get all caky inside there, and I was very happy with that. It made a big difference.

DR. Salzhauer: It's a great operation, and it's really simple. It's not something that people have to suffer with.

Jeannine: NO, not at all.

DR. Salzhauer: Especially considering how easy it is.
