“Silver surgery” and the secret to face lifting
DR. Salzhauer: We talked about the increasing trend toward the sixties-and-older age group having what they call “silver surgery”. The most common operation is the upper eyelids, second most common is face lifts, and third most common in older women, believe it or not, is breast reduction and breast lifts. So even if you're 60-plus and you've been carrying around the extra weight on your chest for all these years, it's never too late to get them reduced and start feeling more active and do all the activities that you maybe were prevented from doing in your younger years because your breasts were too big. So I thought that was surprising. But it can be done and we do it. And anybody that's interested can call the office.
Jeannine: And also, those women, some of them already had a face lift. They're 60, they had a face lift say 12 years ago, and they need a little freshening up again.
DR. Salzhauer: The secret to face lifting is nipping and tucking, and tucking, and tucking, and tucking. Because the first face lift lasts about 7 to 10 years, and a second face lift, after about 10 years, not a full face lift, but just like a little refresher nip and tuck can really maintain that look. IF you let it go too long then you need another full face lift. And it's a little — the truth is that if you lift more than 3 times, I think the skin starts to get very tight and looks very unnatural. Especially if you don't add volume to the upper cheeks to the cheeks with a fat transfer or sculptra or something like that. So –
Jeannine: We don't do that. We have the natural look. But –
Dr. Salzhauer: Of course. We have the natural look in all our patients. But the only way to get the natural look is to know that the unnatural look exists, and how to avoid it.
Jeannine: Well, your first face lift should be at 48 years old. That's just a fact, before you're 50.
DR. Salzhauer: [laughs.] Actually, we've had a lot of people come in in their late thirties and early forties lately for S-lifts and mini-lifts and that sort of thing to try to â And there is an argument to be made for that. Because if you wait âtil sixty to have your first lift, and then we do a face lift and you look forty, it's a big drastic change. It's not easy to hide from your friends and family. But if you do it in your forties and even earlier, it's a subtle change and nobody will really … your friends and family might not notice that you've had any work done, and you can just sort of keep looking great. Into your sixties if you just keep refreshing the look every couple of years.
Jeannine: That will be me, that will be me.
DR. Salzhauer: Well, you look fabulous.
