Fat Removal from Bags Under the Eyes.

Jeannine Morrissette: We have an email from Wesley in Hollywood.

Dr. Michael Salzhauer: Okay.

Jeannine Morrissette: Wesley says he has bags underneath his eyes and he really wants to know how to deal with that.

Dr. Michael Salzhauer: Okay. Bags under the eyes, you know, can be caused– usually are caused by fat that’s herniated or protruding out from underneath the globe or the eyeball itself. And, you know, your eyeball has fat attached to it. It clings to the muscles around the eyeball and it’s usually there to cushion the eye from any kind of trauma. Now, as you get older, there’s a septum or there’s a thin layer of tissue that holds back the orbital contents and the fat and keeps it close to the eyeball itself. As you get older, that septum weakens and there’s changes in the position of the fat and it starts to bulge out. Now, the way we correct that is we make an incision and the way I do it is I make the incision inside the eyelid itself so there’s no scar on the outside of the skin or the outside of the eye and I go in through the inside of the eyelid and take out the extra fat or put the fat back where it belongs, you know, and make the tissues around them firmer so that the fat stays in position. And that usually deals with most of the bags around the eyes. Now, another, a related problem with that is dark circles around the eyes and usually that’s caused by three things, either pigment problems where the sun tans that skin a little bit darker or second cause of that would be small veins near the surface of the skin and the third reason could be these bags that protrude out and cause a little bit of a shadow and that shadow makes you look like you’re tired or have dark circles under the eyes. Okay. And, Jeannine, Jeannine’s had that done. You want to talk about that procedure?

Jeannine Morrissette: Yes, I have had that done. I had it done about two years ago and everybody always was saying to me that I looked tired and I really wasn’t and Dr. Salzhauer did my eyes and he went in trans-con which is he went in through my eyelid, my under lid, and there was no– you never would have known I had them done and my uppers, the scar, you cannot see at all. Everybody, please, give me a call at the office at 305-861-8266 or call me here at the station. I’d be glad to answer any of the questions and, remember, our consultations are completely complimentary and, like I said, there isn’t much I haven’t had done.

Dr. Michael Salzhauer: Yeah, Jeannine is a real, you know, we call a home run or, you know, she’s a great patient, well educated, you know? She had some body image issues a few years back and her before and after pictures are amazing and you can see her, she always carries around her fat picture with her.

Jeannine Morrissette: At all times.

Dr. Michael Salzhauer: At all times to show people because people just can’t believe how great she looks. You can meet her here in the office and you can go to our website, which is balbody.com, www.balbody.com or balharborsurgery.com or niptalkradio.com, any of those websites will link you through to see pictures, before and afters. Another thing that I like to do in my practice is imaging, you know, complimentary computer imaging so that people can get an idea of what’s realistic and what they will look like or what we hope they will look like after their surgeries. And I try to keep expectations, again, in the realistic range. You know, not everybody’s going to be a Jeannine. Plastic surgery is…

Jeannine Morrissette: But they can try. They can try.

Dr. Michael Salzhauer: …is an art. They can try. You know, plastic surgery is an art as much as a science and, you know, I think we do excellent work here at Bal Harbor Plastic Surgery.

My mom was considering getting surgery for the bags under her eyes, but she fears that the surgery will somehow affect her eyesight. Will it?

this surgery does not affect the eyesight. the recovery is fast and the scars are not noticeble. Minor swelling and bruising for the first week is possible, but the results are amazing.
